The
New Parents
Edit

Everyone buys for the baby. Almost nobody buys for the two people holding it, and they are the ones who need something.

Occasion A new baby
Approach For the parents
Curated by Maison Grey

A baby arrives and the house fills with small clothes it will outgrow before autumn. The gifts are lovely and they are all pointed at a person who cannot yet see across a room.

Meanwhile two adults are not sleeping, not eating properly, and not leaving the house. They are being asked how the baby is by everyone they meet, and nobody is asking how they are. That gap is the whole opportunity.

"The best new-baby gift is aimed at the mother, arrives already cooked, and requires nothing to be assembled."

01 Food, Already Cooked

A month of dinners,
arriving already cooked

New parents do not cook. They eat cereal at four in the afternoon and forget lunch entirely. A standing order of real food from a good kitchen — delivered weekly, heated in one dish, no thinking required — is the gift they will still be talking about at the christening.

Set it to begin in week two, not week one: the first days are buried in visitors bearing lasagne. Ask about allergies once, then never mention it again.

02 Sleep
A quiet bedroom in soft light A Few Nights
Buy time · Night help

A few nights of
somebody else being awake

Two or three nights of a postnatal doula or night nurse is, in practical terms, the most valuable thing anyone can hand a new family. It is also the thing they will never buy for themselves, because it feels like an admission rather than a purchase.

Give it as a fixed, already-paid gift rather than an offer — exhausted people decline offers. Frame it as three nights in the sixth week, when the initial help has gone home and it is hardest.

03 For Her, Specifically
A glass bottle of organic argan oil on fine linen Kahina Giving Beauty
Never justify · Organic argan oil

One bottle for
both of them

Cold-pressed organic argan oil, one ingredient and nothing else, hand-harvested by Berber women’s cooperatives in the High Atlas and ECOCERT certified. Good enough for her face and gentle enough for his skin after a bath — the rare thing in that house that belongs to her and works for both.

Argan is a nut oil, so ask about family allergies first and patch-test before it goes anywhere near the baby. Buy the largest bottle: this is the one thing she will use twice a day for a year.

04 Somewhere To Go
A glasshouse path in a botanic garden A Year's Membership
Buy access · Membership

Somewhere warm
to go all day

The house shrinks by about eleven in the morning. What new parents need is a destination that is warm and dry, costs nothing once you are through the door, has somewhere to feed and change, and where nobody minds a baby making a noise. A year at a botanic garden, a museum or a conservatory is precisely that, and it gets used weekly.

Choose the one closest to their front door rather than the grandest — twenty minutes with a pram is the difference between weekly and never. Check the café and the lift before you buy.

05 The Long Nights
A handheld games console on a table in low light Analogue Pocket
Buy the hours around it · Handheld console

Something mindless,
beautifully made

At three in the morning nobody wants to be improved. They want an hour that asks nothing, and reaching for a phone means email, comparison and other people’s babies. The Analogue Pocket is a machined handheld that plays original Game Boy cartridges on a screen far better than the ones we remember — the elevated version of doing nothing.

Choose it over a phone precisely because it only does one thing. Add a couple of cartridges from the games they actually played, which costs very little and is the part that lands.
